Evil Dead Burn (2026)

By far the weakest of the "Evil Dead" franchise films to date. A lack of pacing, overlong pauses in action/horror, an anticlimactic ending and a pervading sense of "seen it all before but better", for me at least, defines this production.

Acting is reasonable, as are special effects but its not enough to really make this film an engaging experience.

In my opinion, a lack of direction in the script, in particular, notably sluggish pacing and the absence of innovation, result in an unremarkable action/horror experience. 5/10 from me.

I was in one of the test groups who watched this movie 6 months before the release and they actually implemented a bunch of suggestions I have and it ended pretty good!

All evil dead movies are similar so I will just say in my review it follows the style of the last movies but with a better back story for the characters (it's independent from all other movies so in theory you could watch it even if you never heard of evil dead). The best movie from the remake trilogy

As a massive horror fan, I give this latest installment a solid 7/10. While I still thoroughly enjoyed the experience and highly recommend catching it in theaters, it didn't quite reach the perfect 10/10 heights of the previous entries for a couple of specific reasons.

**What Held It Back:**
- **The Shift in Demon Behavior:** In the previous films, the Deadites felt like pure, primal, uncompromising evil. There was no negotiating or reasoning with them—their sole purpose was absolute destruction. In this movie, the demons feel a bit too humanlike. They talk and interact in a way that shifts the tone away from that relentless, otherworldly terror of the earlier films.
- **Out-of-Place Ending Music:** The choice of closing music was a major misstep. Ending a gritty horror experience with a silly French rap song completely broke the atmosphere. A film like this demands an intense, dark, and brooding sonic backdrop—genres like dark ambient or black metal fit this aesthetic perfectly, not modern hip-hop.

**The Verdict:**
Despite these minor gripes, a 7/10 is still a strong rating. The movie delivers great tension, solid horror sequences, and is absolutely worth your time. If you haven't watched it yet, go ahead and check it out—you won't be disappointed!

Things don't exactly get off to a great start for "Alice" (Souheila Yacoub) when her drunken bully of an husband takes off in his car on her birthday and wraps it round a tree. No great loss, you might think, but his dad "Edgar" (Erroll Shand) seems a little upset and so goes to say farewell before he can be cremated. Big mistake - for the not quite deceased "Will" (George Pullar) is determined not be crisped up just yet. You see he is now possessed by an evil that knows that his drippy brother "Joseph" (Hunter Doohan) has inadvertantly discovered the only weapon on Earth that can consign him and his kind back to Hell. Using his dad as a conduit, he now returns to a home where his now widow feels a little unwelcome in the company of his mother "Susan" (Tandi Wright); his brother's gal "Thya" (Luciane Buchanan) and his cantankerous, wheelchair-bound, grandma "Polly" (Maude Davey). The question is, will "Alice" and "Joe" conclude quickly enough what the menacing monster that has invaded their home actually wants and can anyone stay alive long enough to find and/or use it? Predicable, well yes, but I'm not sure that matters. This is much more of a gore-fest in the spirit of the earlier "Evil Dead" movies where the targets for the malevolence assume almost immortal qualities of invincibility - just ask "Joe" and the sharpened contents of the dishwasher - so they can repeatedly bounce off the sanitary wear in the bathroom, or from the top of the building, or from the end of a rather brutal looking garden cutter and return to fight again. On that score, this provides quite a quickly paced and relentless series of gruesome scenarios whilst we can largely ignore the dialogue and, frankly, just about all of the acting. Sure, it has sequel written all over it for much of the second part, but amidst the chaos, cutlery and dentures and by using some lively photography there is fun to be had and to be honest, I found it way more macabre and frightful than almost anything I've seen from this genre this year.

Watching **EVIL DEAD BURN** becomes an ordeal that tests how close the line between the MPAA's R and NC-17 ratings can be pushed like no other horror film seen this year -- and maybe several years before.

Assaulting audiences with tongue-in-cheek, stomach-churning horror has long been the hallmark of Sam Raimi's **EVIL DEAD** franchise since Bruce Campbell first fired up his chainsaw and declared it "Groovy" nearly 40 years ago.

In director Sébastien Vanicek's hands, after Raimi handpicked him for this latest outing following his skin-crawling French-language debut **INFESTED** (2023), there is more humor -- but also far more cruelty than any prior film in the franchise.

As with **EVIL DEAD RISE**, there is a somewhat disconnected intro -- equally horrific -- before the main story settles in, where the central cast (Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan) experience graphic and disturbing violence that may make some audiences sick to their stomachs.

As the Deadites descend upon a dilapidated, rural family home and a grieving family led by a young widow, the sheer amount of cruelty each of the characters endures is at times overwhelming. In one particular moment, a dinner scene around the family dining table is especially cruel and wince-inducing.

But for the use of some well-timed gallows humor, the whole affair might have otherwise seemed like something out of the blood-soaked dreams of St. Thomas Aquinas.

With a threadbare plot, gnarly vignettes of escalating brutality, fans of the practical effects Raimi first introduced to audiences in 1981 will surely embrace this latest offering for all its coagulated gore.

But underneath the pools of blood and viscera -- is Yacoub's earnest portrayal of Alice, whose ordeal throughout the movie is an empowering example of triumphing over spousal abuse and generational trauma.

When the end inevitably comes -- *but wait! there's more! (a mid-credits scene and a substantial post-credits scene that's worth the wait if you still have the stomach for it)* -- you may leave the cinema drained from the graphic catharsis of enduring this.

If **EVIL DEAD** films have always been about pushing the envelope -- **EVIL DEAD BURN** may get the distinction of pushing it further than any of its predecessors. Erroll Shand, Greta van den Brink, Tandi Wright, and Maude Davey co-star.

This is a worthy successor to the franchise, and it does a lot of fun with the source material. The characters are fun, which means that you get to engage with them and feel something when they meet their gruesome demise, which is way better than having interchangeable teens just being lost instantly when in some cabin somewhere. The movie has plenty of fun gore and intricate kills and does not lose sight of its core narrative. It's claustrophobic and very tightly shot, and the post-credit murder is fantastic, calling back to Evil Dead Rise.

The film strikes a great balance, delivering clever narrative tie-backs to Evil Dead Rise alongside a subtle, underlying connection to the lore of the original films. Rather than resting on nostalgia, it uses those classic elements to build a story that feels fresh while remaining distinctly true to the franchise's roots.

The shift in setting works brilliantly here. Moving the terror out of Rise’s cramped city apartment block and into a sprawling, secluded farmhouse gives the film a completely different kind of claustrophobia. The rural atmosphere and isolated location gave off massive Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Baker family vibes. That uncomfortable sense of being trapped with a deeply unhinged, hostile family dynamic long before the supernatural madness even takes over.

When the Deadites do unleash, the film delivers in spades. Modern Evil Dead entries have really amped up the brutal, relentless nature of the gore, and Burn is no exception. What makes it work so well is the sheer tactile impact of the set pieces. Between the aggressive sound design and a reliance on heavy practical effects over cheap digital tricks, every injury, splash of blood, and horrific transformation feels uncomfortably real and punishing.

It’s really encouraging to see movies like this succeeding, especially since horror felt like it was going through a bit of a dry spell recently. We’re finally getting a steady stream of inventive, high-quality genre films that actually respect the audience and make the trip to the cinema worthwhile.

I’d highly recommend Evil Dead Burn to any horror fan. The best way to experience these modern entries is to disconnect them from Raimi’s 80s originals. Those were iconic products of their time, whereas this current era is leaning into dark, visceral, unfiltered horror. Both eras are brilliant in their own right, and Burn proves this franchise still has plenty of gas in the tank.

Let me start by saying I LOVED 'Evil Dead Rise'.

This was BAD. I was truly let down as I had high hopes from the 2023 installment.

The acting was meh, the story was blah.

Where was ANY Necronomicon? They said there was to be three different stories about three different books. I saw no Necronomicon in this movie...?

The surprise cameo made no sense.

I am hoping this will be the worst of the three movies as the next one is supposed to be a prequel of sorts.

The entire Evil Dead scenario seems to be losing its continuity at this point. I wasn't impressed with this film as a Evil Dead movie, however I understood the themes of trauma, abuse and healing that were present throughout. It kind of felt like someone wrote a different film then slapped the Evil Dead moniker on it. The Evil Dead lore has jolted around in so many odd directions over the years, but I suppose that's to be expected from a franchise that had Army of Darkness in it.\

The main cast was forgettable, outside of [Souheila Yacoub](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/2037046-souheila-yacoub) as our last girl and [Eroll Shand](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/150396-erroll-shand) as the Deadite Edgar. Hunter Doohan needs to get some roles where he's not playing the slimy, cowardly cretin. It's becoming a typecast at this point.\

On the whole I give it 6/10. Unimpressive, but not bad.

If you thought the era of Hollywood horror filmmakers using over-the-top gratuitous and totally uncalled for gore and violence on women and girls to cover up for shallow scripts and lack of creativity, well, you were wrong. This is exactly what Sam Raimi (producer), Sébastien Vanicek (writer-director), and Florent Bernardand (writer) did with this unbelievably bland latest entry into the Evil Dead film series. I've seen lots of B-rated horror flicks with much lower budgets delivering much more creative and substantial scripts and entertainment than what I got from this. Yet the sheer amount of gratuitous violence and gore meted on women (and a girl) in this movie are such that one wonders whether one or more of the men (and yes, it's all men) behind the production of this movie was going through a harrowing divorce with a woman when they made it. This, or they just straight up hate women, viscerally. It doesn't help at all that all this violence is wrapped up under a thin veneer of the most stereotypical and tropey domestic violence story one could write, as if doing so would somehow magically justify all of said violence. This is all so disappointing especially given how creative and rich the preceding entry into this series (Evil Dead Rise) was.

In all, if you're someone that loves horror films with at least a bit of meat on them, then you'll be wasting your time on this. Just skip it. However, if you're one for absurd levels of senseless and pointless gore and violence with almost no script to back it up, then have at it. From the stars are I've given it, you can guess which kind of person I am.

This did not feel like an Evil Dead movie at all. It tried to make you care about the characters with the themes of family trauma, but it just didn't work. The movie was cruel for the sake of being cruel (I realize the irony when saying this for an Evil Dead movie). We simply have NO ONE to root for, so all the excessive gore on display just doesn't have any impact. After enjoying Evil Dead Rise quite a lot, I went into this with high expectations, and I'm mad at the movie we got.
